My friend from across the park, Everton FC mascot Changy the Elephant, joined myself, ex-Reds full-back Alan Kennedy, stadium announcer George Sephton and Liverpool actor Kurtis Stacey to launch this year's Race for the 96 which took place in May. More than 2,000 runners took part in the event at Stanley Park to celebrate the lives of the 96 Liverpool FC fans who were unlawfully killed at Hillsborough. A special guest on the day was ex-Reds manager Rafael Benitez.
In May, I joined pupils from Prescot Primary School who had beaten a load of other schools from Merseyside for the right to represent LFC at the Premier League Schools tournament. The competition took place at Everton’s Goodison Park ground with teams all representing their local Premier League squads. Well done to all the girls and boys who represented LFC. I had my own competition to deal with! I was up against my friends Changy [Everton mascot] and Fred the Red [Manchester United mascot] in dizzy penalties. It was so much fun, but I’m sure they fixed it as I didn’t win!
I felt super lucky when I was asked to spend the day at the LFC Soccer School. It wasn’t just a normal day though - it was exclusively for all the LFC Official Junior Members. It was tough getting to sleep the night before knowing I was going to do something so exciting the next day. Mum read to Little Liver, my sister Ruby Red and I to get us to sleep! I woke up super early, put on my LFC kit, had some breakfast and off I went. The coaches welcomed us with a very motivational pep talk (I imagined it to be Klopp!) We spent the whole day learning new skills and playing games. When the final whistle blew, we all set off back to the hall for our prize presentation and two very special players got The Liverpool Way award! I took pictures with all my friends at the end of the day and gave them all their very own Mighty Red pin badge. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my day!
I couldn’t believe it when LFC Retail asked me to come down to the official kit launch in May. They gave me my very own top with my name and number on the back, extra special backstage access and I got to see my good friends Robbie Fowler and Jason McAteer before meeting Jon Flanagan, Simon Mignolet, Philippe Coutinho and Natasha Harding. We took pictures in our new kit. How cool is that?!
I popped over to Widnes for an open training session for Liverpool Ladies FC season ticket holders. Here I am joined by the team - back row: Siobhan Chamberlain, Emma Lundh, Danielle Gibbons, Laura Coombs, Ashley Hodson, Kate Longhurst, me!, Satara Murray, Gemma Bonner, Niamh Charles and Natasha Harding. Front row: Caroline Weir, Rosie White, Sophie Ingle, Katie Zelem, Mollie Green, Maz Pacheco, Shanice van de Sanden, Martha Harris and Mandy van den Berg.
At the Liverpool Ladies FC v Reading Women's FC fixture in July, we organised a penalty shoot-out during the half-time interval and here I am trying to do my best Siobhan Chamberlain impression! Liverpool Ladies FC won the FA WSL 1 fixture 2-0 thanks to goals from Natasha Harding and Laura Coombs.
The first stop of the USA Tour for me was San Francisco. I met up with my friends at Street Soccer UK at the Tenderloin Children's Playground. It was boss! We got to play loads of football, met the LFC Legends and they even made a song up about me: “Red, red, red, oh Mighty Red!" It was sad that I had to leave as I was having so much fun but they said I can go back any time!
I enjoyed my visit to the Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara to watch the team take on AC Milan in the International Champions Cup. We absolutely smashed it. It was a good 2-0 win with Roberto Firmino scoring the decisive goal and then producing a smooth wave to the fans. It was definitely a team effort with Divock Origi setting us up with the first goal.
Before the game against AC Milan I got to meet our opponents mascot Milanello. We soon became good mates!
Did you know San Jose is the home of some big companies? Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft and even NASA have a base there. It was so cool to see all of these places in one area. One company I couldn’t wait to see was Baskin-Robbins. I even met some friends in Dunkin Donuts' mascots. I got to bring some friends along, so I chose Dejan Lovren, Alberto Moreno, Joel Matip and Marko Grujic. We had plenty of ice cream and fun with the fans.
Liverpool FC Ambassadors Robbie Fowler and Ian Rush joined me in attending a Special Olympics USA Soccer Clinic to show their support for the charity and the Liverpool FC Foundation. The clinic took place at Bellamarine College to join in with football coaching for 30 participants with additional needs. After joining in with the coaching session, the former Reds strikers took part in a question and answer session before I handed out goodie bags to all the participants.
The Liverpool FC Foundation visited Ronald McDonald House in Stanford during the USA Tour to join in with the charity's Fun Day. Ronald McDonald House provides free 'home away from home' accommodation to families while their child is in hospital. Since 1974, the charity has helped address families' needs every day, with 305,000 volunteers and staff members and connections with medical communities around the world. I joined LFC Foundation coaches and Reds ambassadors Ian Rush and Gary McAllister, who both took part in summer games with local children and their families. We then handed out goodie bags to all the children, signed autographs and posed for photographs.
WIN! WIN! WIN!
A drive to school with Mighty Red!
LFC Official Membership is giving Junior Members aged 4-11 the chance to be taken to school in the Mighty Red mobile and have Mighty Red attend an assembly at their school!
On a day in November 2016, to be agreed with your school, you and a friend will be picked up from your house by Mighty Red’s friend. You’ll be the envy of all your friends as you pull up at the school gates in Mighty Red’s branded car where Mighty Red himself will be waiting to greet you! He’ll then take part in a special assembly so that all of your friends can meet him, there’ll be the chance for photos and to get his signature too so you have a memento to take away from the day. As if that wasn’t all enough, you and your friend will receive a bag of LFC Goodies to take away!
