Steven Gerrard's Liverpool FC Under-19s are top of Group E at the half-way stage of their UEFA Youth League campaign after winning two of their opening three matches.
Bobby Adekanye netted twice with Herbie Kane and Liam Miller also on target on Matchday 3 as the Reds overturned a one-goal deficit to beat Maribor Under-19s 4-1 in Slovenia to cement their position at the top of the table.
It was a game in which Gerrard also showed his tactical nous as with Rhian Brewster and Edvard Tagseth missing on international duty he introduced a surprise 3-4-3 formation featuring Ben Woodburn operating in a deep-lying central midfield role at Lendava Sports Park.
The 4-1 success ensured the Reds got back to winning ways having been beaten on Matchday 2 away to Spartak Moscow. Adam Lewis had given LFC the lead with a stunning drive in the Russian capital but a double-strike from Aleksandr Rudenko put the hosts ahead and there was no way back after Conor Masterson was sent off 15 minutes before full-time.
That defeat came after Liverpool FC began their UEFA Youth League campaign in style with a thumping 4-0 win against Sevilla at Prenton Park. Two goals from Curtis Jones and another from Kane gave the Reds a commanding half-time lead before Masterson completed the scoring from Woodburn's assist.
With six points from three games the Reds are two clear of Sevilla and Spartak Moscow at the half-way mark and now face Maribor at home (1st November) before travelling to Sevilla (21st November) and completing their Group E campaign when Spartak visit Merseyside (6th December).
