Premier League Preview
Sheffield United FC
Sheffield United FC were founder members of the Premier League when it began in 1992/93 but following their relegation in 1994 have only spent one campaign in the top-flight – 2006/07 – until being led to promotion from The Championship last season by manager Chris Wilder.
The Blades were bottom of League One just four games after Wilder took charge at Bramall Lane in the summer of 2016, but he quickly transformed the team and they went up as champions, with a club-record 100 points, before earning a second promotion in three seasons in 2018/19.
That earned Wilder the LMA Manager of the Year award and after signing a new contract this summer he has also brought in five new faces with ex-Blade Phil Jagielka returning from Everton FC, goalkeeper Luke Freeman arriving from Queens Park Rangers FC, ex-Manchester United FC midfielder Ravel Morrison joining on a free transfer and Republic of Ireland international striker Callum Robinson signed from Preston North End FC for a club-record transfer fee. Striker Lys Mousset has also signed from AFC Bournemouth for a club-record fee.
“We will have to be cute and up our game on the pitch and off the pitch, but we recognise the challenge that is in front of us,” said Wilder. “It is an enormous challenge staying in the division and it will obviously be better than getting out of the previous division, but we are excited and we are not scared about it.”
