Moments of the Season

While we wait for Premier League football to return, we've picked out six of our favourite moments from Liverpool FC's record-breaking season so far...

Firmino's Back-heel

The Reds beat the Magpies 3-1 in September and Liverpool FC's third goal was thanks to a moment of pure creative genius by Roberto Firmino.

When Mo Salah passed the ball to Firmino on the edge of the box he had his back to goal, five Newcastle United FC defenders behind him and one in front ready to make a tackle.

It seemed like nothing was on, but in the blink of an eye Firmino dragged the ball behind him with his right foot before back-heeling it sideways into Salah's path with his left. The Toon Army defenders were still wondering where the ball had gone when Salah stroked it into the net. What an assist.

Fabinho's Strike

While Manchester City FC were still calling for a penalty for handball by Trent Alexander-Arnold at one end of the pitch, Liverpool FC were counter-attacking at the other. Sadio Mané got a cross in from the left, but Ilkay Gundogan cleared it outside of the penalty area.

The ball ran into the path of Fabinho, about 30 yards from goal. As the Brazilian midfielder took a touch, there were cries from the Anfield crowd of 'shoooooot'! Fabinho listened.

He struck the ball powerfully with his right foot, cutting across the shot to guide it arrow-like past the diving Claudio Bravo and into the net, making it 1-0. Anfield erupted, Manchester City FC's players complained, VAR confirmed it wasn't handball and Fabinho's brilliant strike stood. The Reds went on to win 3-1.

Origi's Lob

Divock Origi had already scored once and the Reds were leading the Merseyside derby at Anfield 2-1 when he netted an absolute beauty, displaying both control and composure.

Spotting Origi was shaping to run behind the Blues' defence, Dejan Lovren clipped a long pass forward that went over all 10 of Everton FC's outfield players. While still on the move, Origi allowed the ball to drop over his shoulder before stretching out his right leg and controlling it perfectly.

Everton FC goalkeeper Jordan Pickford had come off his line to meet the ball, but Origi's sublime control now left him stranded outside of his six-yard box. The Belgian striker took full advantage by letting the ball bounce once before using his instep to lob the ball over Pickford and put the Reds on course for what proved to be a fantastic 5-2 win.

Alexander-Arnold's Celebration

Trent Alexander-Arnold regards his performance in the 4-0 Premier League win at Leicester City FC on Boxing Day as the best individual display of his career so far. He created two goals, won a penalty and completed the scoring with a brilliant first-time finish from Sadio Mané's pass.

The 21-year-old celebrated by running to the corner of the King Power Stadium where the travelling Kop were situated and folding his arms while looking towards them.

Alexander-Arnold was copying the trademark celebration that French international striker Kylian Mbappe uses when he scores for Paris Saint-Germain FC and it didn't go unnoticed in the French capital. “Yeah, I saw! I'm proud,” said Mbappe. “This guy is amazing!” We think so too, Kylian.

Alisson's Assist

Liverpool FC were beating Manchester United FC 1-0 with 90 minutes on the clock when Alisson collected a weak shot from Aaron Wan-Bissaka. His team-mates appealed for him to slow the game down, but Alisson had other ideas.

Spotting Mo Salah in space on the halfway line, the Liverpool FC goalkeeper struck a guided drop-kick forward that allowed the Egyptian King to race clean through.

Daniel James tried to catch him, but Salah shrugged off his attentions to slot the ball under David de Gea and into the goal. Salah celebrated by whipping his shirt off in front of the Kop before turning around to see Alisson sliding on his knees towards him, having run the full length of the pitch to celebrate both Mo's goal and his assist.

Milner's Clearance

After going an early goal down to AFC Bournemouth and turning it around with strikes from Mo Salah and Sadio Mané, this Premier League game was still in the balance for Liverpool FC when Philip Billing played a pass for Ryan Fraser to run onto.

Adrian rushed off his line, but the Scottish winger lobbed the ball over the Reds' goalkeeper for what seemed a certain equaliser...until James Milner appeared on the scene.

Playing at left-back in place of the injured Andy Robertson, Milner rushed back towards his own goalline and made a sliding volley to clear the ball from just underneath the crossbar before ending up in the back of the net himself. It was an outstanding piece of last-ditch defending and helped Liverpool FC to secure three more precious points in the Premier League title race.
