Pre-Season Friendlies

Tuesday 20th July
Liverpool FC 1-1 FC Wacker Innsbruck
Saalfelden Arena, Austria
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joël Matip made their returns from injury and Ben Davies started his first game in a red shirt as Liverpool FC opened their pre-season campaign with a 1-1 draw against Austria's FC Wacker Innsbruck.
The match was the first of two played over a 30-minute period as manager Jürgen Klopp wanted his players to have a half-hour of full intensity to blow the cobwebs away. They soon got going as there were just five minutes on the clock when Divock Origi netted from the penalty spot after Darijo Grujcic was adjudged to have handled Owen Beck's cross in the box.
Left-back Beck was one of several young players to start with Leighton Clarkson, Jake Cain and Tyler Morton forming a youthful midfield and 16-year-old forward Kaide Gordon catching the eye with his first-touch and ability to beat a man.
Gordon had a shot saved before Ronivaldo nodded FC Wacker Innsbruck level with a far post header to complete the scoring in the Reds' pre-season opener.

Tuesday 20th July
Liverpool FC 1-1 VfB Stuttgart
Saalfelden Arena, Austria
Fifteen minutes after seeing one set of players face FC Wacker Innsbruck, Jürgen Klopp fielded a completely different XI against Germany's VfB Stuttgart. Ibrahima Konaté made his first appearance for the Reds and both Harvey Elliott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain played in experimental roles with Elliott on the right of a midfield three and the Ox operating as a false nine.
It was from Oxlade-Chamberlain's defence-splitting pass that Mo Salah should have opened the scoring in the third minute only to be denied by VfB Stuttgart keeper Fabian Bredlow from point-blank range.

The german side took the lead moments later when Sasa Kalajdzic’s back-heel teed up Philipp Forster to fire past Adrian, but with Connor Bradley debuting at right-back and Kostas Tsimikas looking lively down the left an equaliser arrived in the 21st minute.
James Milner's cross found Tsimikas darting in at the far post and the Greek left-back touched the ball across goal for Sadio Mané to nudge home on the goal-line. It earned the Reds a second 1-1 draw of the afternoon playing beneath the shadow of the Austrian Alps with debutant Konaté describing it as “an unforgettable moment for me.”

Friday 23rd July
Liverpool FC 1-0 1.FSV Mainz 05
Untersberg-Arena, Austria
Liverpool FC's first 90-minute friendly of pre-season was settled by an 86th minute own goal from 1.FSV Mainz 05 defender Luca Kilian. The centre-back made a mess of trying to clear Owen Beck's cross and sent the ball into the top corner of his own goal to give the Reds a 1-0 victory.
Jürgen Klopp fielded two different sides in each half against his former club in front of 3,500 fans at Grodig’s Untersberg-Arena. Sadio Mané forced a save and Harvey Elliott blasted a shot across goal before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain went closest to breaking the deadlock before half-time when he sent a curling effort just wide of the post after a neat pass from Naby Keita.
The German Bundesliga side had the better of the second half chances. Leandro Barreiro drilled a low shot wide, Billy Koumetio made a goal-saving block and Adrian was forced to make a flying tip-over from Dominik Wanner’s volley as the Reds struggled to defend corners.
A goalless draw seemed on the cards until Killian diverted Beck's cross into his own net and only an offside flag against Curtis Jones in the build-up denied Kaide Gordon a 90th minute goal after he finished well from Jones' pass.

Thursday 29th July
Liverpool FC 3-4 Hertha BSC
Tivoli Stadium, Austria
Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez made their long-awaited comebacks from injury as the Reds lost 4-3 to Hertha BSC in an entertaining clash in Tivoli. The defensive duo returned to the pitch together in the 69th minute to huge applause from Liverpool FC fans amongst the 11,000-strong crowd in Tivoli.
Hertha BSC were 2-0 up after 31 minutes through goals from Santiago Ascacíbar and Suat Serdar, but Sadio Mané pulled a goal back from a Kostas Tsimikas cross before Takumi Minamino sent the sides into the break level with a clinical finish from Mo Salah's brilliant back-heel assist.

The Reds dominated the second half with Mané, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Kaide Gordon all having efforts saved. At the other end, Hertha BSC substitute Stevan Jovetić took his side's tally to four goals from four shots on target with a brace before Oxlade-Chamberlain completed the scoring with a late volley after van Dijk's header across goal was punched to him by goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow.
Despite the result it was a good night for Liverpool FC with Diogo Jota and Andy Robertson getting their first minutes of pre-season and both van Dijk and Gomez coming through their comeback game unscathed.

Thursday 5th August
Liverpool FC 2-0 Bologna FC 1909 (game 1)
Camille Fournier Stadium, Évian-les-Bains
Diogo Jota and Sadio Mané struck early goals as Liverpool FC beat Bologna FC 1909 2-0 in the first of two 60-minute friendlies against the Italian club in Évian-les-Bains. The Serie A side simply couldn't cope with the Reds' incessant pressing in the opening 20 minutes with both goals coming from stray defensive passes.
Just seven minutes had been played when Kevin Bonifazi, under pressure from Mané, gave the ball straight to Jota, who waltzed past the Bologna FC 1909 defender and slotted home.
It was 2-0 six minutes later courtesy of a cool Mané finish after he seized onto another misplaced pass, rounded the goalkeeper and nutmegged Bonifazi on the line.
Jota, playing as the central striker, had three other opportunities saved and Mo Salah rattled the crossbar after the interval as the Reds won comfortably, although Siniša Mihajlović's side had a late Riccardo Orsilini goal disallowed for offside.

Thursday 5th August
Liverpool FC 1-0 Bologna FC 1909 (game 2)
Camille Fournier Stadium, Évian-les-Bains
Alisson, Fabinho, Roberto Firmino and Xherdan Shaqiri all played their first minutes of pre-season football as Jürgen Klopp fielded a different starting XI in the second 60-minute friendly against Bologna FC 1909.
It was Shaqiri who created the only goal of the game in the 14th minute when his lofted, diagonal cross was expertly volleyed home by Takumi Minamino. Firmino headed a Kostas Tsimikas cross wide and after the half-time break Divock Origi missed an even better chance to make it 2-0.

The Belgian striker struck the post with a 46th minute penalty awarded after Ben Woodburn, playing in an unorthodox right-back role, was fouled in the box by Gary Medel.
Just moments earlier Origi's header – from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's corner – was cleared off the line by Sydney van Hooijdonk, while Joe Gomez got another valuable 40 minutes of football as he continues his comeback from injury.

Sunday 8th August
Liverpool FC 1-1 Athletic Club
Anfield
Diogo Jota netted at Anfield in front of a near-full house as the Reds played in front of a home crowd of around 40,000 for the first time in almost 18 months.
There was a lively atmosphere in the stands and the noise levels peaked when Jota rifled home a 13th minute opener after Naby Keita won possession and Sadio Mané teed the Portuguese forward up. Only a clearance off the line denied Jota a second while Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mo Salah had efforts saved and Virgil van Dijk went close with a couple of headers.

A twisted ankle forced Andy Robertson to limp off shortly before half-time – Owen Beck coming on at left-back – and Athletic Club equalised in the 53rd minute when Alejandro Berenguer converted a low cross at the far post.
Mané forced goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala into a save from close range after fine work from Keita before Harvey Elliot came closest to winning it with a curling shot that struck the angle of post and crossbar, but the Reds had to settle for a 1-1 draw on their Anfield return.

Monday 9th August
Liverpool fc 3-1 CA Osasuna
Anfield
The Reds completed their pre-season campaign in style with a 3-1 victory against CA Osasuna at a boisterous Anfield. A first half double from Roberto Firmino followed Takumi Minamino's opening goal on a night when Anfield debutant Kaide Gordon and the versatile Ben Woodburn caught the eye.
Minamino had a one-v-one chance, from Gordon's pass, saved just moments before he opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Sent scampering through again – this time by Fabinho – the Japanese international's shot looped over goalkeeper Juan Perez via a deflection of Jesus Areso.

Captain for the night Roberto Firmino then struck twice. Kostas Tsimikas played a neat one-two with Minamino before crossing for Firmino to net from six yards out before Liverpool FC's no.9 scored again when he chested down Minamino's cross and calmly slotted home.
CA Osasuna got a goal back in the second half courtesy of a Kike header, but with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain having a couple of fizzing efforts saved and the Anfield crowd giving substitutes Thiago and Jordan Henderson rousing receptions when brought on for their first minutes of pre-season, it was a feel-good finale ahead of the Reds' Premier League opener at Norwich City FC.
