Kit Classics

To celebrate the launch of the brand new Liverpool FC home kit for season 2016/17 let's raid the wardrobe for some retro classics…

Boys in blue

1892 BOYS IN BLUE!

Liverpool FC run out for their first-ever game wearing blue-and-white halved shirts, long blue shorts and blue socks – an almost carbon-copy of the strip worn by their Mersey rivals and former Anfield tenants Everton FC a couple of years previously.

Red dawn

1896 RED DAWN

The club switches its shirt colour to the now famous red and from this moment a new identity is forged. The original red strip includes white shorts and red socks and features a pocket on the shirt and buttons that could be fastened from the middle of the chest upwards.

Badge of honour

1955 BADGE OF HONOUR

A club crest makes its first appearance on the shirt, five years after it was worn on Liverpool FC's away strip in the FA Cup final. White collars are also introduced and a red stripe added to the shorts.

Red all over

1964 RED ALL OVER

The now famous all-red strip is born after captain Ron Yeats models a prototype for manager Bill Shankly who then instantly decides that it will make his players ‘look ten feet taller’.

Wings of desire

1969 WINGS OF DESIRE

The all-red strip is here to stay and now a stand-alone white Liver bird crest replaces the larger oval-shaped design of former years.

Trail blazers

1979 TRAIL BLAZERS

A groundbreaking deal is signed with Japanese electrical giants Hitachi and Liverpool FC become the first Football League club to wear shirts with the name of a sponsor emblazoned across the front.

Centurions

1992 CENTURIONS

To commemorate the club’s centenary a specially-designed club crest is introduced along with the logo of new sponsors Carlsberg, and with the advent of a new era in English football comes an official Premier League patch on the arm.

Kings of Europe

2005 KINGS OF EUROPE

Reebok’s last-ever Liverpool FC home strip is another used solely for European participation: all-red with gold trim and now featuring five stars to denote those glorious major triumphs on the Continent.

Warrior code

2012 WARRIOR CODE

Warrior Sports unveil their first Liverpool FC strip and in a nod to tradition it is plain red with a stand-alone yellow Liver bird crest back on the chest.

New Balance

2015 NEW BALANCE

Liverpool FC and New Balance reveal the new 2015/16 home kit, unveiled at Anfield by first-team players. It adopts a chequerboard pattern inspired by the red-and-white flags and scarves on the Kop.
