Memorable Matches

The Reds have played in loads of boss April matches so let's start with a recent one – LFC 4 BVB 3!

Jürgen Klopp's former club Borussia Dortmund arrived at Anfield in April 2016 for the second leg of a Europa League quarter-final and raced into a 2-0 lead before making it 3-1 after Divock Origi had pulled a goal back. Could the Reds somehow get three goals in the final 24 minutes to go through?

You bet they could! Philippe Coutinho and Mamadou Sakho made it 3-3 on the night before Dejan Lovren climbed highest at the far post in the 90th minute to head home James Milner's cross and send Anfield absolutely wild!

Twenty years earlier, in April 1996, there was another epic 4-3 game at Anfield, this time in the Premier League between Roy Evans' Liverpool FC and Kevin Keegan's Newcastle United FC with both clubs challenging for the title. Robbie Fowler scored first, Les Ferdinand and David Ginola made it 2-1 to the Magpies before Fowler equalised.

Another famous Anfield April win came in 1988 when Kenny Dalglish's champions elect thrashed Brian Clough's Nottingham Forest FC – one of the best teams in the league – 5-0 with goals from John Aldridge (2), Ray Houghton, Peter Beardsley and Gary Gillespie.

Alright Aldo!

Watching in the stands was Preston North End FC and England legend Sir Tom Finney – a world-class winger in his day and Bill Shankly's boyhood hero – and he was full of praise for King Kenny's men: “It was the finest exhibition I've seen the whole time I've played and watched the game. You couldn't see it bettered anywhere, not even in Brazil. The moves they put together were fantastic.”

That Liverpool FC team went on to win the league, losing just two games all season, and were nicknamed 'better than the Brazilians' after that fantastic five-goal win against Forest.
